Professional Center

Business

BOTH LONG-STANDING & NEW

The main businesses in town form a T, with the Main Street businesses along the vertical part and those located along the north-south highway forming the top. Along Main Street are a post office (some residents receive mail at their homes, but most have PO boxes), the Hendrum Civic Center, which also houses the equipment of the volunteer Fire Department, Rescue Squad, American Legion facilities and Police Department, Northwestern Bank (which has other locations in Moorhead, Dilworth and Ulen), Schnabel Insurance   Midwest Inspection, and Heritage Publications, publisher of regional newspapers and books.

The Professional Building presently houses the City Clerk's office, a hair salon, Essentials of Healing Massage and Reflexology, Sue sews, a sewing machine retailer who also offers classes, and a Lake Agassiz Regional Library LINK site. The latter has been a very welcome addition to the community. There is space in the Professional Building for several other businesses as well, with rental rates that are a fraction of anything that can be found in a bigger community.

Main Street is also home to the Last Chance Saloon, a beautifully remodeled old tyme saloon that offers on- and off-sale beers and liquor, as well as a variety of delicious foods. The lower level features a pool room, and it routinely provides entertainment such as karaoke or live bands. Next door is the local office for Simplot Grower Solutions, a large ag business in Hendrum which is one of the largest employers in town.

Recently installed, old-fashioned-style streetlamps line Main Street, giving it something of a Norman Rockwell feel. Well-tended planters of flowers brighten the sidewalks from spring through early fall. Over a national holiday, American flags are an added decoration, and in December, holiday lights are brought out.

North of Main Street along the east side of the highway is Nepstad Oil Company, a gas station which also offers a hardware section, groceries, movie rentals, soft serve ice cream, auto parts and a deli. A regular set of friends and neighbors gather there each morning and afternoon over coffee and something to eat. South of Main Street along the east side of the highway is Hetland Auto. Brothers Wayne and Eldon Hetland run a combined operation of auto-mechanics and used-car sales.

Across the highway to the west are the Norman County Highway Department garage and KLA Truck and Trailer Sales. New businesses on this stretch of road include Tommerdahl-Holte Ag Sales, offering lawn and garden equipment, utility trailers, and farm machinery, and Mitchell Feeds, which serves as a processing and packaging site for sunflowers to be cleaned and made into birdseed or sold to produce sunflower oil.

A local resident offers in-home childcare, while neighboring towns provide other services: medical, dental, and vision care, grocery stores, flower shops, a movie theatre, and much more.
