Sometimes those who live in small communities miles from malls and multi-plex movie theatres get asked, "Yeah, but what do you do for fun?" Hendrum has options in that department too!
Besides those previously mentioned - taking part in or joining the spectator crowds at school activities, games, and events; and the outdoor-recreation options at the school - the Hendrum Community Park about a half-mile east of town is a beautiful location with a picnic shelter and outdoor-cooking facilities, playground equipment, a ball diamond, and a woodsy place to walk. Four campsites offer full RV hook-ups (electric, water, sewer), and there is plenty of additional camping space for those who don't mind "roughing it."
In 2007, a boat launch site on the Red River has been refurbished, providing better access, an improved grade of slope and additional concrete planks to make it more user-friendly. Near the boat launch is City-owned land which may be used for primitive camping.
The Hendrum Rec Club offers regular events such as a "Santa Day" in December, an Easter Egg Hunt, and other kid-friendly activities periodically. For adults, there may be a scavenger-hunt competition or a street dance. At present, they are gearing up for the annual Veterans' Day dinner. The Rec Club also puts out a community calendar, inviting people to list their birthdays and anniversaries in it, as a way for us to extend friendship to one another.
Dance classes are offered to kids and adults throughout the fall, winter, and spring, led by a "Just for Kix"-certified instructor who lives in town. A Cub Scouts pack meets regularly in Halstad and is open to boys in the school district. 4-H has a distinct presence in the area, as does a summer sports program for youngsters, children's programs at the library, and a 3-week, half-day summer school program - full of interesting activities and field trips that make it more fun than "summer school" sounds.
A new lake Agassiz Library LINK site is open several days a week and also offers free wireless internet service as well as a nice selection of books, magazines and movie videos.
In July 2007, Hendrum celebrated its 125th anniversary with a huge birthday bash. Thousands of current and former residents enjoyed a three-day get-together that included an all-school reunion, parade, helicopter rides, dances, and the firing of the old town cannon. It was a great tribute to the early pioneers who first settled this area, as well as to all those who followed. The sheer number of folks who "came home" for the celebration was indicative of the fondness felt by folks who have lived any part of their lives in this town.
